Homage to Mikis Theodorakis

Athens, Concert Hall (Megaron Moussikis), Alexandra Trianti Hall

Saturday, February 4, 2023, 20:00

Maria Farantouri and Tassos Apostolou perform known and unknown works by Mikis Theodorakis.

In the first part Maria Farantouri sings -for the first time in Greece- the cantata The Survivor – Arcadia VII, set to poetry by Takis Sinopoulos. It was composed in 1969 in Zatouna of Arcadia, where Theodorakis was in exile from the military junta, and is part of the composer’s body of works with the general title Arcadia – hence the second name, Arcadia VII. Under the composer’s direction, it was performed by Maria Farantouri in concerts abroad, where it was recorded in 1972, receiving excellent reviews for Theodorakis’ composition and Farantouri’s stirring performance. Takis Sinopoulos is a poet of the first post-war generation and in this poem (written in 1959), he expresses the existential and social exclusion of his time in a sharp and allegorical language.

In the second part, Maria Farantouri and Tassos Apostolou present excerpts from the Odyssey cycle, set to poetry by Kostas Kartelias, from Poetica, Asmata, as well as other well-known and beloved Theodorakis’ songs set to poetry by the great Greek poets.
