Maria Farantouri and Zülfü Livaneli were deified in Herodeion - Eva Nikolaidou

Songs of universal ideology united two peoples, the Greeks and the Turks, last night, justifying our expectations. In a Greece broken by floods and fires, devastated morally and economically, the presence of the two fighters – performers gained special weight. They completed the picture of an era.
The souls of the interpreters communicated with the audience. For a long time, with the flashlights from the mobile phones on, the whole Herodeion was filled with small lights, like stars that shone, spreading more light than the suns of the stage. The orchestra of the ERT impressed us.
Messages of love, peace and freedom dominated the whole programme. Towards the end, Maria sang with verve and power what was born from the highest of the lyrics of Yannis Ritsos, set to music by Mikis Theodorakis, “Romiossyni”. Notes of nostalgia, hope, friendship and freedom. A union of creators. A distillation of a full life of two artists who leave an indelible imprint on our global musical universe.
