Visit of the Voice of Greece – Gerald Jatzek

The article is a review of the concert of M. Farantouri at Konzerthaus (Grosser Saal), in Vienna, in 04.10.2005.

On Tuesday evening, the audience had the opportunity to experience the more than 40 years of collaboration between Theodorakis and Farantouri, because the singer gave the evening the form of a ritual and the audience willingly followed it.

Relying on a six-piece (classical) ensemble, which could only be described as a Band by the enthusiasm with which it played, it traced a cycle from Beautiful City to the composer’s rhythmic songs. The combination of classical voice and piano, which would have caused embarrassment in the 1968 and 1973 concerts, is now taken for granted. Pianist and arranger Henning Schmiedt and cellist Jens Naumilkat have also adapted themselves comfortably to traditional interpretations.
