One might wonder what the commonalities are between the art of the one’s luminous improvisation and the sense of tragedy that reaches the frenzy of the other. A night last year, at the foot of the Acropolis, Lloyd’s melodies met Farantouri’s music and the result was an explosion of intensity, intelligence and emotion. Was that jazz? A song? Opera? Rebetiko? What does it matter… When in this country, which is on the brink of destruction, such a kind of divine service arises for a chaotic time, then this musical event deserves our eternal respect.
