Democracy Celebration
Greece, Thessaloniki, City Hall Forecourt
Friday, 24 July 2026, 20:30
To preserve historical memory and uphold democratic values, the Municipality of Thessaloniki is organizing a special musical event dedicated to the 52nd anniversary of the Restoration of Democracy in Greece (July 24, 1974). The event serves as a modest tribute to all those who fought for freedom, human rights, and the restoration of the democratic system, while highlighting the timeless value of democracy as the foundation of social cohesion, cultural creativity, and collective memory.
The evening’s featured performer is Maria Farantouri, one of the most prominent figures in Greek culture, whose artistic career is inextricably linked to the struggles for freedom and democracy. The concert will also feature a short guest set by Panayotis Karadimitris.
As part of the event, the Municipality of Thessaloniki will present an honorary award to Maria Farantouri, recognizing her invaluable contribution to the struggle against the dictatorship. During the Colonels’ Dictatorship (1967–1974), she dedicated her art and her voice to the cause of democracy and freedom, conveying the Greek people’s message of resistance to the entire world and highlighting, through her work, the power of culture in the face of oppression.
At the same time, visitors will have the opportunity to tour a photography exhibition from the Vassilis Bozikis Photographic Archive, which presents historical snapshots and figures from the period, helping to preserve this historical legacy and highlight the importance of democracy for future generations.
The “Festival of Democracy” aims to become an annual tradition for preserving collective historical consciousness and culture, where music and shared experience come together to honor one of the most significant moments in modern Greek history.
