The musical performance “Beautiful City”, which moved audiences and critics alike, returns for one last night at the foot of the Acropolis.
Directed by the acclaimed director Yorgos Valaris, with the sensitivity and theatrical quality befitting Mikis Theodorakis’ iconic work, the performance is a profound and moving tribute to the late composer, as part of the “Mikis Theodorakis Tribute Year,” as officially declared by the Ministry of Culture, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth.
As a folk tragedy flooded with primal emotions, “Omorfi Poli” combines myth, poetic language, and melodies, creating a contemporary ode to Mikis’ timeless and multidimensional work, through a new artistic composition of leading performers specially designed for the magical stage of the Odeon of Herodes Atticus.
Maria Farantouri, Mikis Theodorakis’s “priestess,” having performed his greatest works and inextricably linked her artistic career with him, collaborates with beloved singer Manolis Mitsias. They are joined by Martha Frintzila, with her unique theatrical and musical presence, and Yannis Dionysiou, one of the most authentic voices of the new generation of folk singers. The dramatic structure is enriched by two great actors, the great tragedienne Lydia Koniordou and the award-winning actor Michalis Sarantis, who leave their mark on the artistic composition of the anniversary production of “Omorfi Poli”.
The performance is complemented by dancers Faidra Daioglu and Kostis Tsiamagas, who convey the drama and lyricism of the songs on stage through their physical expression.
The music is conducted by the renowned maestro Achilleas Wastor, who leads a 7-member musical ensemble that brings Theodorakis’ melodic genius to life on stage.
